Monthly Digest Ep. 2 published on 10 March 2023.
My first group show happened! I spent January and February working like crazy on three pieces for my first ceramics show - and it was lovely. My parents flew into town for the opening, my aunt and uncle drove up, friends I hadn’t seen in ages came out — everyone I love dearly was there! It was really magical. I found this $80 vintage dress on Etsy (l find most of my vintage clothes on there) that I bought in December when I was initially invited to do the show. I hadn’t bought myself much of anything all that year so this was a really special purchase! It waited patiently in my closet until reception night :-)
BEFORE AND AFTER:
Now, this was an interesting time. For the past few years I’d been feeling stuck. Oh boy, was I playing the victim! Patterns were repeating themselves although I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Something just felt off in me. Which was weird because I never thought of myself as sad or moody or depressed… And yet there I was with my guard up! On the defense! Quick, react! I was left feeling so unstable & insecure about where I was at in life and where I was headed. All of this confusion and pain was starting to bubble up to the surface. I was LOST IN THE SAUCE as they say 🍝 I’m getting a little ahead of myself because fifteen days after I posted this video something happened that changed my life… Ahhh. All this to say this group show gave me hope for the first time in a long time :-)
And guess what? All three of my pieces sold BEFORE the opening! I had energy that month, so much of it I started running. I didn’t know what to do with all this newfound excitement! I was hopped up on positive energy. I was over the moon. I felt loved.
A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS:
1.) People's Pottery Project - Luckily enough I got to experience Frieze L.A. (it was happening during the opening of Potluck coincidentally). A real sweetheart subscriber of mine reached out to me and told me she was working at Frieze this year and invited me. It was MAGICAL. Getting to experience this massive contemporary art fair during the time of my first show felt like a dream. I found People’s Pottery Project at one of the booths! They employ formerly incarcerated women, trans, and non-binary folks by making ceramics. Their work is BEAUTIFUL and I bought two bowls from them as a treat to myself.
2.) E.L.F. Glossy Lip Stains - can confirm I still love these! They have so much pigment and at the same time make your lips look really juicy and glossy… oooo, baby. Favorite shades: Spicy Sienna, Fiery Red, Berry Queen
3.) My dad and I went to NINTENDO WORLD!!!
4.) What Happened Was... (1994), dir. Tom Noonan - Noonan wrote, directed, and starred in this film which I just love, it makes me all gushy inside. Set in a New York City apartment, co-workers Jackie and Michael have their first date. “Their conversation gradually reveals their lonely lives and hidden personalities.” It’s funny, and awkward, and sad, and intriguing, and raw, and it just feels so REAL! It’s an incredible film. I gave this one 4½ stars on Letterboxd!
There are no endings, only new beginnings! See you at ep. 3 :-)
